This soil used to be the paradise of “ancient Fujianese” in the ancient times. It’s the ancestral home for “Minyue people” and the seat and core region of the capital of “Nanhai Kingdom”. It’s also the ancestral home for Hakka people and Heluo people. Hakka culture, Heluo culture and local culture merged here, the charm of which attracted many cultural personalities in the history like Zhang Jiuling, Li Gang, Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming, Song Ci, Wen Tianxiang, Xu Xiake, Ji Xiaolan and etc. It also turned out notable figures in culture and arts like Shang Guan Zhou, Huang Sheng, Hua Yan and etc.

Five counties of the seven divisions of the City are inhabited by Hakka people, the population of which covers 75 percent of the total population. The Hakka culture, architecture, folk customs in Minxi are of long history, richness, colorfulness, and unique characteristics. Tingzhou, China’s Famous Historic Town, is regarded as the “Hakka Capital”, while the Tingjiang River is regarded as “Hakka Mother River”, and the Li’s Ancestral Temple, the construction of which began in the 16th year of Emperor Daoguang of Qing Dynasty, is regarded as the “Base Camp for Li Clans around South-east Asia”. Nowadays, there are over 1.2 million overseas Chinese, compatriots in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan who are originally from Longyan, among them, 300,000 Hakka people in Taiwan. It’s an important birthplace of Maoism as Mao Zedong wrote many of his great works here. The famous Gutian Congress (the 9th CPC Congress of the 4th Red Army) was held here, which established the creed for the construction of party and army.
